Verified against official platform specifications, AT Protocol / twitter-text schemas, and live profile editors
Every social network enforces two distinct sets of constraints on your profile: the hard character limit (where the platform blocks saving or stops accepting input) and the visual fold threshold (where mobile apps or search results truncate your bio behind a ... more or ... see more tap). Use the reference table below to compare all 15 profile fields side by side.

How UAX #29 Grapheme Clusters, UTF-16 Surrogate Pairs, and twitter-text v3 measure emojis and styled fonts
Have you ever drafted a 148-character Instagram or X bio that looked completely valid in a basic word processor, only to have the social app reject it when you added a single emoji or bold Unicode word? That happens because software platforms define a “character” using four different technical standards:
Defined by Unicode Standard Annex #29 and implemented in modern browsers via Intl.Segmenter. One grapheme cluster equals one visually perceived character on screen. Even a complex family emoji (👨👩👧👦) or a waving hand with a skin-tone modifier (👋🏽) counts as 1 grapheme. Bluesky explicitly enforces maxGraphemes: 256 in its AT Protocol schema.
Counts each atomic Unicode code point (U+0000 to U+10FFFF). A standard emoji like 🚀 (U+1F680) is 1 code point, but a country flag like 🇺🇸 is built from two Regional Indicator symbols (2 code points), and 👨👩👧👦 is four person emojis stitched together by three Zero-Width Joiners (7 code points).
Any character above U+FFFF (the Basic Multilingual Plane) requires a surrogate pair of 2 UTF-16 code units. This includes standard emojis (🚀 = 2 units, 👨👩👧👦 = 11 units) and Mathematical Alphanumeric “Fancy Fonts” (𝐁𝐨𝐥𝐝 = 8 UTF-16 units for 4 letters). Switching our tool to Strict UTF-16 Safe mode guarantees your styled bio never fails web form validation.
X assigns a weight of 1 to Latin/ASCII characters (U+0000–U+10FF), a weight of 2 to every emoji (regardless of ZWJ complexity) and every CJK/fullwidth character, and a flat weight of 23 characters to any http:// or https:// URL due to automatic t.co link wrapping.
Why a bio that passes the character limit can still get cut off on mobile profiles
Instagram and Threads allow up to 150 characters, but mobile profiles only display 4 lines before collapsing the rest behind a ... more button. If you write 5 short bullet lines totaling just 75 characters, your 5th line (usually your call-to-action pointing to your bio link) will be hidden from visitors. Need clean spacing? Use the Instagram Line Break Generator or our Fix IG Line Breaks button.
In August 2025, TikTok doubled its native mobile app bio limit from 80 to 160 characters. However, the TikTok Web desktop profile editor and several regional app builds still enforce the 80-character limit. Furthermore, bios longer than 80 characters or 4 lines often fold on smaller screens. Our counter tracks both thresholds simultaneously so your primary hook stays inside the first 80 characters.
LinkedIn Headlines (220 chars), GitHub Bios (160 chars), and Twitch Bios (300 chars) silently strip line breaks and replace them with spaces when rendered. In addition, LinkedIn truncates your headline at ~60–70 characters in search results, connection requests, and comment headers. Front-load your role and core value in the first 65 characters and separate clauses with • or |.

Because LinkedIn truncates headlines at ~65 characters in search and comment headers, placing your exact role and company before the first bullet (•) ensures people immediately know who you are before clicking your profile.
Bio limits, emoji counting, TikTok 80/160, and profile truncation
TikTok expanded its mobile app bio limit from 80 to 160 characters starting in August 2025. However, the TikTok Desktop Web profile editor, third-party social management APIs, and certain regional or legacy accounts still enforce the original 80-character cap. To ensure your bio never fails to save or cuts off across devices, place your core value proposition and call-to-action inside the first 80 characters.
Instagram enforces two independent limits on profile bios: a hard 150-character ceiling and a visual 4-line display limit. If your bio contains 4 or more line breaks (5+ lines), Instagram collapses everything after Line 4 behind a '... more' tap—even if your entire bio is only 60 characters long. Keep your bio to 4 lines or fewer so your call-to-action arrow stays visible above the fold.
X uses its open-source twitter-text v3 weighting algorithm rather than simple character length. Standard Latin letters, numbers, spaces, and punctuation count as 1 character each. Every emoji (whether a simple 🚀 or a 7-code-point family sequence 👨👩👧👦) and every CJK (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) character counts as 2 characters. Any http:// or https:// URL inside your bio is wrapped by t.co and counts as 23 characters.
Most styled Unicode text (such as 𝐁𝐨𝐥𝐝 or 𝘐𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘤 letters from Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols, U+1D400–U+1D7FF) resides in Unicode's Supplementary Multilingual Plane (Plane 1). In JavaScript and many backend validators that measure UTF-16 code units (string.length), each styled letter occupies a 2-unit surrogate pair instead of 1 character. Enable 'Strict UTF-16 Safe' mode in our editor to verify that bios containing fancy fonts or skin-tone/ZWJ emojis will never be rejected upon saving.
LinkedIn Headlines (220 chars), GitHub Bios (160 chars), Twitch Bios (300 chars), and X web profile cards collapse line breaks (\n) into standard spaces. If you paste a 4-line stacked bio into a LinkedIn Headline, it merges into a single run-on sentence. Use our 'Lines → • Dots' or 'Lines → | Pipes' optimizer button to convert multi-line bios into cleanly separated single-line copy.
A LinkedIn Headline accepts up to 220 characters, but search results, connection invitations, and post/comment headers only show the first ~60 to 70 characters before adding an ellipsis (...). LinkedIn's About summary allows up to 2,600 characters, but mobile profiles truncate after ~200–210 characters (~300 characters or 3 lines on desktop) behind a '...see more' button.
No. Raw URLs typed directly inside the bio text on Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Threads, Pinterest, and YouTube are rendered as plain, non-clickable text and waste 15–30 characters of your bio allowance. Only X, Bluesky, Discord, and Facebook Pages parse clickable links inside the bio text. On Instagram (up to 5 links), TikTok (1 link with 1,000+ followers or Business account), X, and LinkedIn, always place your URL in the dedicated Website field.
Bluesky's AT Protocol specification (app.bsky.actor.profile) explicitly defines the description field with maxGraphemes: 256 and maxLength: 2560 (UTF-8 bytes), and the Display Name field with maxGraphemes: 64. Because Bluesky validates extended grapheme clusters (Unicode Standard Annex #29), any composite emoji counts as exactly 1 character toward your 256-character limit.
On Instagram (30 chars), TikTok (30 chars), X (50 chars), and Threads (30 chars), the Display Name field is heavily weighted by in-app search engines alongside your @username. Placing your primary niche keyword in your Display Name (for example, 'Maya Lin | UI & AI Design') frees up 15–25 characters in your main bio while helping users discover your profile in search.
Never. All character segmentation, Unicode UTF-16/UTF-8 analysis, twitter-text weighting, and live profile previews execute 100% locally in your browser. Your drafts never leave your device.
